This is my review of the movie Anne: Journey to Green Gables. The movie is eighty-five minutes long. For more photos go here This is quite the interesting movie. There are parts that are very similar to the book, and parts that are very different from the book. In the beginning of the movie, Anne is day dreaming and pretending that she is a princess. She comes out of her dream to a odd looking thing- oh, wait, that's Mrs. Hammond! We then see Anne taking care of the children. Mrs. Hammond packs Anne a lunch to take to Mr. Hammond. Anne takes a boat to get there and pretends to be the Lady of Shallot. Like the Lily Maid scene in the book, the boat begins to sink. Anne makes it to shore and finds a very upset Mr. Hammond. Mr. Hammond becomes upset, has a heart attack, and dies.
Anne is then taken to the Grout Orphanage run by a mean lady, Madame Poubelle.
Madame Poubelle needs money, and when Anne tells Madame Poubelle that she [Anne] is an heiress Madame Poubelle half-heartedly believes. Madame has Wilfred keep an eye on Anne to see if Anne has anything of value. Tupper sees Anne talking to Katie Maurice in a mirror, and mistakes the mirror for an expensive jewel. Madame Poubelle then believes Anne's story and decides that she must get money from Anne's relatvies. After hearing Madame's scheme, Mavis, a worker at the orphanage, helps Anne escape the orphanage and gives Anne a ticket to Prince Edward Island. From there the story is very similar to the book. We have Anne getting upset with Mrs. Lynde, Anne breaking a slate over Gil's head, Anne telling Hetty not to eat the pudding because a squirrel fell into it, and Anne wanting a dress with puffed sleeves.
Towards the end of the movie, Madame Poubelle discovers where Mavis sent Anne, and sends Tupper and Wilber to bring Anne back. Tupper and Wilber disguise themselves as Anne's aunt and uncle.
Anne doesn't believe them, and Marilla and Matthew can't decided whether to keep Anne or to let her relatives take her. When Marilla discovers that the amethyst brooch is gone, she tells Anne that if she tells the truth, that she will stand up for her. Anne tells her the truth, but Marilla doesn't believe her. Anne decides to check into her relatives and seaks the help of Gilbert. Gilbert then signals Felix and Diana, and they go to the boarding house.
There, they discover that the relatives are really employees of the orphanage and that they are the ones that have taken the brooch. Wanting Marilla's help, Anne then tells Marilla that the amethyst brooch fell into the Lake of Shinning Waters. Marilla is furious with Anne and lets the relatives take Anne. When at the train station, Marilla and Matthew discover that the relatives are fake and see that Madame Poubelle is wearing Marilla's brooch. Madame Poubelle kidnaps Anne, and floats across the island. Thanks to Bailey, Anne's pet squirrel, she is able to escape.
The movie ends with Marilla telling Anne that she can stay at Green Gables.
